New OnLive service could mean you won’t have to upgrade hardware for a long time.

perlmanPerlman, a serial entrepreneur whose startup credits include WebTV and Mova, says his Palo Alto, Calif.-based company has developed a data compression technology and an accompanying online game service that allows game computation to be done in distant servers, rather than on game consoles or high-end computers. So rather than buying games at stores, gamers could play them across the network — without downloading them.

Linux kernel 2.6.29 released.

tux_linux_penguinIt’s out there now, or at least in the process of getting mirrored out.

The most obvious change is the (temporary) change of logo to Tuz, the
Tasmanian Devil. But there’s a number of driver updates and some m68k header updates (fixing headers_install after the merge of non-MMU/MMU) that end up

being pretty noticeable in the diffs.

The shortlog (from -rc8, obviously – the full logs from 2.6.28 are too big to even contemplate attaching here) is appended, and most of the non-logo changes really shouldn’t be all that noticeable to most people. Nothing really exciting, although I admit to fleetingly considering another -rc series just because the changes are bigger than I would have wished for this late in the game. But there was little point in holding off the real release any longer, I feel.

This obviously starts the merge window for 2.6.30, although as usual, I’ll probably wait a day or two before I start actively merging. I do that in order to hopefully result in people testing the final plain 2.6.29 a bit more before all the crazy changes start up again.

Acer to introduce Android smartphone in September

android-logoAcer Inc., the world’s third-largest personal-computer vendor, will introduce a mobile phone in September that runs on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, an official at the Taiwanese company said.

The A1, equipped with a touch screen, is among four handset models that Acer plans to debut that month, the person said, asking not to be identified because he’s not authorized to comment on the matter. Henry Wang, a spokesman at Taipei-based Acer, declined to comment. Marsha Wang, a spokesman at Google in Beijing, declined to immediately comment.

Acer would join HTC Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics Inc. and Motorola Inc. in adopting Google’s mobile operating system to meet rising demand for so-called smartphones that allow users to view videos and business documents. The Android software will run 5 percent of the world’s smartphones by next year, according to CLSA Ltd. estimates.

Acer last month unveiled four handsets using Microsoft Corp.’s Windows operating system, the first models released since its acquisition of phone maker E-Ten Information Systems Co. last year. The Taiwanese company projected in April last year that handsets will account for 10 percent of sales by 2011.

Google, based in Mountain View, California, started Android in 2007 as part of an industry effort to create a free software system for phones. Based on the Linux operating system, Android is open to any programmer who wants to develop features for it.  HTC last year became the first phone vendor to offer an Android-equipped handset.

ExecTweets.com showcases business execs on Twitter

Today, Federated Media launched a beta of ExecTweets, yet another way to sift through the vast amounts of data coming out of Twitter. This time out, as the name would imply, the focus is on the Tweets of executives (77 currently, see a full list on the ExecTweet About page). This is a bit different from most similar sites which sift data based on content rather than origin. The other big difference? ExecTweets is sponsored by Microsoft and has official buy-in from Twitter (see Check Out ExecTweets on the official Twitter blog). The web is buzzing with speculation that this is the first sign of Twitter’s plan to generate some revenue.

Obama laughs off our financial problems on 60 mins.

Obama laughs off our financial problems.

Watch CBS Videos Online

Maybe because they aren’t “problems” for the government controlling this whole situation.

President Barack Obama said he believes the global financial system remains at risk of implosion with the failure of Citigroup or AIG, which could touch off “an even more destructive recession and potentially depression.”

His remarks came in a“60 Minutes” interview in which he was pressed by Steve Kroft for laughing and chuckling several times while discussing the perilous state of the world’s economy.

“You’re sitting here. And you’re— you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money—’ How do you deal with— I mean: explain. . .” Kroft asked at one point.”

California snaps new photo of aging Manson

manson74California prison officials say the release of a new photo of Charles Manson was part of a program that routinely updates images of its inmates.

Manson, 74, is serving a life sentence for the killings of actress Sharon Tate and six other victims in a brief but sensational crime spree that terrified the Los Angeles area 40 years ago this August.

The Los Angeles Times said Thursday that the new image taken at Corcoran State Prison shows Manson’s gray beard and a receding hairline. The trademark swastika carved in his forehead is still visible but fading

Officials say Manson will be up for parole for the 12th time in 2012.

How to Tweet Your Way Out of a Job

How to Tweet Your Way Out of a Job.

@theconnor says

“Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.”

in which @TimLevad (a channel partner advocate for Cisco) responded:
“Who is the hiring manager. I’m sure they would love to know that you will hate the work. We here at Cisco are versed in the web.”

Needless to say this has been a big story floating around twitter, and someone has even made a webpage http://ciscofatty.com.

Remember, anything and everything you post online is open to the world. Think before you become too transparent.

edit: you can follow what being said about it on twitter. http://search.twitter.com/search?q=cisco+fatty
